About Ruth Halbert

I am an Australian artist, currently living on the south coast of Western Australia.

I work with the rich visual, symbolic and material language of textiles to explore complexities of contemporary life. Much of my work is an attempt to combine opposites: to integrate natural and manufactured materials, to use both science and intuition, and to look for creativity within tradition. I seek to celebrate what we share and how we differ.

In making work, the process is as important to me as the outcome. I value the qualities of touch through hand-making, and sensitivity to materials. Using traditional craft techniques allows me to invent and be open to serendipity. I often work with found and raw materials and simple hand tools, and value the slow processes of making.
